Moving to Dubai

If you are a fan of Fast & Furious, I bet you notice that they mention about the greatness of Burj Khalifa, Dubai. Yeah, it is claimed as the tallest building in the world. Just to give you an overview, Dubai is one of the biggest Emirates in UAE (United Arab Emirates). Here you can find that the competitive spirit is really high where everyone and everything need to be the most of most of most (The biggest mall, the highest building, the most luxurious, etc.).

And here I am now! After finishing 2 terms of study in Switzerland, I am accepted for a year of internship in a 5-star hotel in Dubai. I took Emirates Airline to fly from Indonesia to Dubai with a direct flight for 5 mio rupiah. Quite a good deal.

This hotel that I work with already provided me a nice accommodation, meal and shuttle bus. So in this thing I can save up some money. However, I still can sense that everything here is very expensive, especially meal. For transportation, you can go and take a metro, which is convenient enough to commute. Here are some ways that I do to get settle in this city:

  • Getting my mobile number
You need to have your original passport to get a mobile number. They won't accept a copy of your passport. There are only 2 providers in Dubai: Du & Etisalat. Etisalat is the oldest company and I think this is the official government's company. Whilst, Du is more casual and I think cheaper package. In this case I use Etisalat because on the day I need my mobile number, Du had a bit of problem in the activation. You can find those SIM card stores everywhere  in the mall. To get Internet data on your mobile phone is very expensive compared to Indonesia. I got my basic package with 400MB of data for 84 AED or 25 USD. And here you CAN'T just depend on the Wi-Fi connection.
  • Internet
At home I got the internet because my housemates have been using internet since long time ago, so I only need to chip in. BUT.. if you get a new internet connection, you need to have a certain deposit, and again original passport. The speed of the internet also sucks. It is almost the same speed of internet in Indonesia. This point I don't understand why UAE has a bad internet. They should do something to beat Singapore or Korea if they want to be the first in everything. Lol.
  • Groceries shopping
It's basically easy to find. They have Carrefour, Spinneys, and many local markets. However if you are a pork eater, you will find it hard to buy pork.
  • Bank Account
This is also a troublesome if you don't have a minimum basic salary of 4000-6000 AED. I still remember when I was in The Hague, The Netherlands. The banking process there is sooo easy compared to here. You also need again.. your original passport. Oh, if I haven't mentioned why it's hard to provide original passport on everything, it is because the company will hold your passport to proceed your residence ID. I heard several years ago, company will even hold your passport until you are terminated from the contract.

To withdraw your money you can easily find an ATM with mastercard/ visa/ jcb logo thou.
  • Dining Experience
Most of the foods you will find here are Indian foods, Arabic, and big franchised brands. It is easy to find foods however, it's hard to find the non halal foods, including alcohol. Alcohol consumption needs to be inside the hotel or you can buy if you have alcohol license. To have alcohol license you also need to have minimum salary and can't be a muslim.

So far life is good here. For me as Indonesian, I don't really feel an extreme culture shock. But if I start to compare with the experiences I had when I live in China, NL, & Switzerland, here is very different.

I haven't been around so much, but sure I will share it later when I do. :)

Barcelona 3D 2N

From Switzerland, i bought easy jet ticket to Barcelona for €34+€50=€84. Check www.easyjet.com for budget airline in Europe. You can only bring small cabin baggage. Bringing backpack is always the safer way.

From Barcelona airport, go to Aerobus counter and buy a round trip ticket for €10,90 (one way ticket= €5,90).

I stayed in Plaça Catalunya area or La Rambla. It was really convenient to walk as it is near the city center, gothic area, St. Josep Boqueria, and cathedral. So, from the airport i took aerobus until the last stop (plaça Catalunya).

There are a lot of hotels and hostels along the street. You can explore from Passeig Gracia to La Rambla.

I spent my first night in Flor Park Hotel right in front of the opera house and the metro station Liceu. It was €90 incl tax and breakfast. The room is big and the bathroom is pretty nice. Food was good!

My second night I stayed in Hotel Continental, located right in front of the metro station Plaça Catalunya. One night is €80. Friendly staff, free buffet 24h, room is smaller but bed is comfortable enough. However the room design is all pink. I think they should choose neutral color though. The food was so-so but was happy with the free flow drink

1st day: check in - walked to the gothic area, cathedral, walked along Pg de gracia to the hotel, ate tapaella in St Josep Boqueria

2nd day: park güell (better book the ticket online otherwise you're gonna go back and forth. Better go by bus no 24 from la rambla. From the bus stop is only 5 mins. If you go by metro, take L3 and stop at les cortes, but from the metro stop you need to walk 20 mins on a uphill road)

From park guell i went to Sagrada Famillia. Unfortunately i didn't go in because the schedule they provide is clashed to park guell ticket time. I think buy this online also could work. Took bus No. 96 from park guell.

From park guell i went back to the hotel and then go to FC Barcelona stadium in the evening. Try to find information on their official website, sometimes they have upcoming match announced which yoh might be able to watch. I was lucky i could watch the Spanish basketball league. In the stadium they have a big official store and also museum that worth visiting.

From the stadium I went to Magic Fountain in Plaça Espana. Take the metro L3 and stops in Espana. During summer, the fountain is open from Thursday- Sunday 9-11.30pm

Third day: shopping around Plaça Catalunya and then take the aerobus to the airport. Check your ticket to see which terminal you need to go because the aerobus is divided into 2 directions (T1 & T2)

PS: purchasing T10 ticket is very useful. You can explore Barcelona in 10 journeys by metro/bus with €9.50

Meal budget:
Breakfast: 0
Fast food: €7-9
Restaurant: €20

Overall, Barcelona is really impressive for me. I was so happy and enjoyed the summer break in Barcelona

Bonjour!

It doesn't come from Paris or any other area in France. This time, my "bonjour" is from Montreux, Switzerland. A small city across the Geneva lake which most of the citizens speak French.

I am here for a PGD (post graduate diploma) in Hotel Institute Montreux for 6 months of study and another 6 months of internship.

This is my second time staying for awhile in Europe. But this time it will be a little bit harder to travel because my schedule is very tight. However, I hope I can still share you some stories.

Firstly, I took a flight from Jakarta-Geneva by Qatar. Normal price is USD 754. This was the cheapest one that I knew. But I asked student price and I got it for USD 650 (one trip). Just to make a comparison, other flights were above USD 1000 for one trip.

From Geneva I was picked by the school picked up service. They have a booth next to the customer service on the right side.

Everything seems expensive here. But well, I hope I can survive. Fyi, I only bring CHF 500

This will be a very budgeted journey. Salut!

Post Graduate Diploma in Switzerland

Hi guys,

I will be taking my PGD of hospitality management in Switzerland by this April 6th. I'm going to fly out Indonesia on April 3rd. To be honest, I'm not prepared yet. I haven't bought any flight ticket. Neither paid my tuition fee. Fyi, my visa has just issued two days ago. I know, it's not much time left.

By the time I finish my preparation, I will write it down so that I can share everything to you. What kind of flight, how much the price, and how will I survive in there.

See ya in my next blog. :)

Curhat #1 - 100 words

Sudah lama aku menantikan perjalanan panjang ini di mana hampir semua orang yang kutemui mendecak melihat keindahannya. Terus terang, aku tak sabar lagi. Sekaligus ragu. Perjalanan ini bukan hanya  24 jam penerbangan plus 156 jam, tapi satu tahun penuh.

Apa yang ku khawatirkan? Selimut hangat dan kasur empuk ada. Makanan 3x sehari pun tersedia.

Hmm, mungkin aku takut rindu.

3D2N Raja Ampat

Hi all, firstly I'd like to apologize because I didn't finish my previous post. I really want to tell you the complete story of my journey but.. I can't remember it anymore. Nooo!

Okay, anyway I had another fun and low budget trip to tell. Raja Ampat: heaven on earth in Indonesia.

Some people said that going to Raja Ampat is insanely way too expensive for local tourist. But believe me, going abroad is more expensive.

I  took flight from JKT-Makassar-Sorong by Sriwijaya Air. Round trip would cost more or less 5 million rupiah. I arrived at 6 am

From Sorong, I took the public transportation to Pelabuhan Rakyat Jalan Baru - 4000 rupiah
From Jln Baru I took ojek cost 5000 idr.
Took a ferry boat from Sorong to Waisai (Raja Ampat) at 9 am on monday or you can take the 2am. On Tuesday the boat will only take you to Waisai at 9 in the morning.

Okay, from waisai we still need to go to the islands and find a place to stay. Before my arrival I got a contact of local homestay. I had been there and I would recommend that place. Good hospitality and environment. But if you want a luxurious stay you can go to a resort, which costs around 2-3 mio rupiah per person per night.

I stayed at koranu fyak homestay in Kri island or known as little mansuar island.
You can contact:
0813 44174787 Robben (local)
Or +62 822 38019420 (Stevi, manager - foreigner)

Per person per night was 300.000 rupiah includes 3 time meals.
They provided a pick up service from Waisai to Kri island costs 400.000 per person one way. But sometimes they give a discount.
If you want to learn diving, they also provide international diving instructures.
Diving equipments and course cost 700.000 per person. This price is for beginner diver. The better you dive the cheaper it will cost.
For snorkling you only need to pay 50000-100.000 for the boat.

Even though we only had 3 days and 2 nights we had a lot of fun visiting some islands. I went to Gam Island to see the cendrawasih bird - you need to wake up very early 4 am and wear shoes to see the birds. Besides Gam, I went to manta point, arborek and kabui passage. I didn't go to wayag due to the distance and the limited time i had. However, I believe that there are still more to explore.

For this whole 3D2N trip I only spent less than 10 mio rupiah per person and i'd say it worths the price.

Note: fuel is very expensive in Raja Ampat, that's why most of the budget will go for commuting from one to another islands.

Thailand: Preparation

Thailand is probably getting popular for a cheap getaway destination from Jakarta. Well, not really cheap actually,- unless you get a cheap ticket!-  and yeah I'm one of the lucky people I guess. I found Tiger Airways promotion tickets from Jakarta-Bangkok for only Rp 1. I was so happy and directly bought that tickets for me and my family. Find your ticket https://www.tigerairways.com/id/en/ or http://airasiago.com

I booked my tickets two months ago for departure on July 15th 2013 to July 18th 2013. Honestly the return tickets were not Rp 1. They were more or less Rp 700.000,00. Still cheap though. Since I only got 4 days and 3 nights to enjoy Thailand without any tour guide so I made my own itinerary by reading books and Google-ing.

15/7 11.50 Arrive in Bangkok

20.00-… Dinner + back to hotel
17/7 9.00 Go to Pattaya
  11.00 Check in hotel
  12.00-13.00 Lunch

If you want to go to Madam Tussaud like me, you can buy the ticket online for the cheaper one (http://www.madametussauds.com). In Bangkok, I plan to stay at Siam Swana Hotel near the shopping center at Siam, or The Mix Bangkok Boutique Hotel at Shukumvit Area (I heard you'll find another expats here). In Pattaya, we probably will stay at Copa Hotel. These hotels as I know are not expensive (around Rp 300.000,00/night). Well, even though I haven't decided yet about the hotels, I am very excited to discover this country. What makes me more excited is I'll go there with my family. <3
